Weddings are steeped in tradition. Some traditions continue with deep significance. Others, we continue and may understand why we do them. Seriously, how was the bouquet and garter toss started?! Or smashing cake into each others’ faces? As a wedding photographer in Dayton, I see many types of weddings with of incredible traditions. However, this wedding was a beautiful first. Alex shared her incredible Lakota Indian wedding traditions with me, and it was a joy to learn more about her heritage. And, as she and Cameron joined their lives together in this beautiful Ohio barn wedding, Erin and I happily captured their moments for them!

Usually I meet my couples before the wedding in some capacity. This time, though, I didn’t get a chance to meet them until the day of their wedding, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, I was so excited to meet such incredible people! Both are ridiculously kind and open hearted, as well as driven and successful in their career as pilots. Having met in pilot training school, the sky is literally the limit for them!

Meeting Alex first, we jumped right in with her and her family. They are all warm and inviting, and her mother gave such a beautiful history of the Lakota Tribe while getting ready. Each detail gave such insight into the day. However, getting to photograph Alex out in the woods with her Owinja was a highlight of the day. You see, an Owinja is a quilt given to a member of the Lakota Tribe on their wedding day. This is a special part of the day, and needs documented. We made sure to capture photos of both her alone and with Cameron with their Owinja on their wedding day! And, each item along the way had a special meaning and importance. Knowing that, we took great care to capture both them and their special heirlooms throughout the wedding.

Beyond just the heirlooms, Alex and Cameron’s wedding ceremony was beautiful and intimate. Choosing to marry at the St. John Bosco Chapel at Wright State University, these two said I do in front of their closest friends and family. Then, the time came to start the party at Canopy Creek Farm!

Canopy Creek Farm is Southwest Ohio’s original Ohio barn wedding venue with a rustic chic charm, which fit Alex + Cameron perfectly! Emily from Audrey Gatsby Events was incredible as she guided the day with her wedding planning prowess. Jonathan from Party Pleasers served up incredible music, and Mrs. B’s Catering came through with incredible meals for everyone! From beginning to end, Alex + Cameron had a beautiful wedding full of meaning and love.

Cameron + Alex, thank you so much for allowing me and Erin to capture your day for you! It was a joy to meet you and get to know you, and I can’t wait to see how far you fly (literally and figuratively!) in life together. Congratulations!

And, a huge thank you to Erin Griffith of The Eva Effect for coming and photographing this beautiful wedding with me. It was such a pleasure to get to create with you!
